Joe's Garden 2009

Originally published Friday, September 11th, 2009

We had a long spring in 2009 and I got a late start with my tomatoes, so I ended up with a garden covered in lettuce, arugula, chives, and winter squash. Fortunately the basil thrived this year but the nights just weren't warm enough for the tomatoes. I had some volunteers come up from last year, Heirloom Yellow Pear, Cosmonaut Volkov, and Brandywine. The Yellow Pear grew bigger now than all but one of my seedlings, the Wapsipinicon Peach. I also planted some Early Cherry and they did alright, but the plant stayed petite and close to the ground. They did this last year too. Mid September and all the cilantro has gone to seed, the lettuce has bolted, leeks have seeded, the bees still busily work arugula and oregano, and all my tomatoes are green.
