Are You Vori.Us?

Welcome to our site! Vori.Us was conceived over the past year with the aim to fill a gap in the local food economy. People are interested in voting with their wallets when it comes to local and sustainable foods, but they don't know where to turn. There are certainly many resources out there, more and more of them every day. But it's a fragmented market, and there's where Vori.Us comes into play.

It was over a year ago when I first thought of Vori.Us. We have a neighbor, call her Doris, who raises chickens and sells the eggs to people in the neighborhood. Every once in a while Doris has too many eggs and not enough customers. It's then that she gives us a call. "Will you buy some of my eggs today?" she asks. Well this got me to thinking: how ironic that people in the neighborhood are paying $4 at the local store for "organic" eggs produced by some giant agro-biz 1,000 miles away, or $6 at the local farmer's market for rather ordinary looking, smallish brown eggs with flimsy shells, when for $3 a dozen they could get a dozen beautiful brown eggs from Doris. Eggs the size of a child's fist with shells like iron, so thick and strong you can just about stand on them.

Like I said, there's a lot of good sites out there, wonderful sites even, catering to the local and sustainable food marketplace. Farmer's Market websites are springing up like mushrooms across the country, creative and innovative sites like LocalHarvest have been around for years, strong, insightful efforts like EcoTrust and PugetSoundFresh continually bring new innovations to the marketplace, and industry giants like Amazon and Sysco are making forays into the space with products like Amazon Fresh and Sysco Freshpoint. And yet, something is still missing.

And there's more. The recession has shown us that our very economy is changing. We are moving away from a commission based system into an economy that rewards ownership and accountability.

It is with these things in mind that Vori.Us was born. Vori.Us is a consumer-centric site, providing tools to all segments of the local and sustainable marketplace. Whether you are a farmer, cooperative, distributor, restaurant, broker or consumer, Vori.Us has the tools you need to put you in charge of your connection to the world of local, affordable, sustainable, and tasty foods.

Whether you grow, sell, cook, or eat, we hope Vori.Us will be your pathway to the new food economy.

Cheers, The LocaVori Team

This is an excellent idea for a service, waste not want not, over spend and throw your money away for trash items, well want not as well. Vori.Us seems at first glance to give cunsumers direct connections to good wholesome food that is just waiting to be eaten. How many times in my life (I can't count) did I have something in excess that I knew someone else could use and just didn't know who that person was (and vice & Versa for that matter). I hope this service becomes available for us in NY. I would love to buy products and food that I need from the one source you just can't find on supermarket shelves any more..Love.

Great Service Idea. I hope it grows and helps fill a huge void in our society.

Do you intend to have a menu of states and cities so we can all be "local"?
